Valentina Magaletti is a drummer-composer and multi-instrumentalist who redefines percussion with her original approach. Her versatile technique, ranging from vibraphone to contact microphones, allows her to explore bold and unconventional soundscapes, enriching the folkloric and traditional palette of her native Italy.

As a drummer, she fluidly navigates between alternative and mainstream music. Her prolific discography is a testament to her broad artistic spectrum and impact on the contemporary music scene - and so are her numerous collaborations, including names like Vanishing Twin, Tomaga, UUUU, Raime, Nicolas Jaar and Jandek.

For the LP Kansai Bruises, Valentina Magaletti has combined forces with musician, producer and composer YPY (aka Koshiro Hino of Goat)

YPY is a solo project led by Koshiro Hino. He runs a cassette tape label called Birdfriend, which features underground musicians from Japan and around the world. Hino also operates the contemporary/electronic record label, NAKID.

More Acts to be announced.

Valentina Magaletti

Valentina Magaletti is a drummer-composer and multi-instrumentalist with an inventive approach to drums and percussion. Her versatile technique, which can incorporate anything from vibes and marimba to contact microphones and found objects, results in a style that is forever evolving. Feeling just as comfortable performing behind a delicate ceramic kit as she does hammering out motorik rhythms, her creative take on percussion has resulted in a diverse discography and many interesting collaborations.

As a solo artist Valentina often investigates texture. Batterie Fragile (unjenesaisquoi, 2022) sees the percussionist play a ceramic drum kit conceived by Yves Chaudouët. Magaletti employs wire brushes, wooden reeds and rubber beaters to summon unusual sonic characteristics from the porcelain. In a similar vein, A Queer Anthology of Drums (bié Records, 2022) – originally released on Cafe Oto's Takuroku imprint – reflects on her queer identity, the ritualistic aspects of improvisation, and the opressive realities of lockdown life by collaging together low-fi drones, field recordings and modulated percussive objects. The result is a melancholy montage that bears traces of influence from the visual arts: Dada, Surrealism, Art Brut.

While studying drums, early exposure to both prog and bebop styles engendered an appetite for experimentation. With each new project, Valentina is developing fresh nuances and searching for new ways of teasing out sound from her signature instrument. For Magaletti, playing the drums is akin to an unfolding narrative: stories that eschew spoken language in favour of rhythm, pulse, and vibration.

Recent and upcoming projects include the publishing of the book Basta Now on Women, Trans and non Binary in Experimental music, a new EP Lucha Libre on  Permanent Draft (the new female only editorial and label that Magaletti is starting with her partner),  a new collaborative release with Zongamin as V/Z, Nídia (Principe) as well as a new Holy Tongue album with Shackleton.

YPY

His significant compositions include the hybrid orchestra Virginal Variations (2016), blending classical instruments with electronic sounds, and GEIST (2018-), a fusion of numerous speakers and moving full-body performance piece, INTERDIFFUSION A tribute to Yoshi Wada (2021-) in collaboration with sound artist FUJI|||||||||||TA, and others.

Since 2019, Hino has collaborated with Sado-based taiko performing arts group Kodo, most notably on the music film Shiver (2021, dir. Toshiaki Toyoda), filmed during a month-long residency on Sado Island. Hino composed all the music for this film, performed by Kodo.

He is a member of the ANTIBODIES Collective, founded by musician/director Toshio Kajiwara and dancer/choreographer Yoko Higashino. He has also provided music for choreographer Cindy Van Acker’s work Without References, among others.

In 2023, he performed his new composition Phase Transition with Masayoshi Fujita and Ken Furudate (of Dumb Type) at Rohm Theatre Kyoto. This year, he composed music for an Estonian film director Rainer Sarnet’s 2024 feature film The Invisible Fight. This composition was awarded the Best Composition at the Estonian Film Award (EFTA2024).
