Barely 2 years after forming, Teardrinker come crashing in with their debut album “I Hope This Hurts”. In those 2 years the band caught the attention of heavy music lovers locally, nationally and internationally with their eclectic mix of post-hardcore, black metal, screamo and poetry, as well as with their outspoken activist stance. The band was formed in 2024 by Kimothy Hoorweg (VULVA, Vulvaverse), their partner Gijs van Teylingen (Lijkschouwer), and friends Matteo Cerroni (Lijkschouwer, Throatstabber), Rens de Boer (Lijkschouwer) and Noâh Elshout. In their short existence they’ve played with like minded bands such as Witch Club Satan, Terzij de Horde, Broeder Dieleman, Genital Shame and the Holocausts.
Zanjeer (زنجیر, Urdu for "chain") is a Berlin-based international hardcore punk band formed around 2020, channeling the rage of global injustice through fast, uncompromising hardcore, crust, and d-beat sung in Urdu. After the 2022 debut EP Parcham Buland Ast ("The Flag Is Raised," Symphony of Destruction records), the band's 2026 full-length Seher-e-Maqhoor ("Dawn of the Oppressed," Neon Nile Records) sharpens the attack: it confronts the war in Gaza head-on, declares "FREE PALESTINE" without shame from a German base, and tackles the everyday racism and Islamophobia of European life, fusing raw hardcore touchstones like Raw Power and Ratos de Porão with a few rhythmic ideas from South Asian and Middle-Eastern traditions.
Teardrinker
The band quickly gained the attraction of Roadburn Festival who offered them a secret show at the festival’s 2025 edition. Following its success, the prestigious festival placed a great deal of faith in Teardrinker’s frontperson, Kimothy Hoorweg, by commissioning them to prepare a special show for the 2026 edition. That faith proved justified when Teardrinker, a young band without any full-length releases to their name, performed I Hope This Hurts to some two thousand Roadburn attendees. I Hope This Hurts turned out to be more than just a set of songs. Rather, it constituted an audiovisual spectacle with a poignant political message. Kimothy’s lyrics revolve around themes of identity, oppression, misogyny and the politicising of bodies, strongly influenced by Italian feminist scholar Silvia Federici’s seminal work Caliban and the Witch.
The band has now transformed this commissioned piece into their debut album “I Hope This Hurts”. It’s become a brutally honest and heartbreaking album that centers the band’s political beliefs and DIY activism with songs about solidarity with Palestine, queer and trans people, bodily autonomy and dysphoria, and the cyclical nature of harm perpetrated against non-white non-male people othered for the benefit of hegemonic white-supremacist capitalist patriarchy. And so “I Hope This Hurts” sits perfectly within a long tradition of revolt against these oppressive systems. It’s defiantly hopeful, in recognition of those who fought this battle before - the ones on whose shoulders Teardrinker proudly stands.
