2232 Editing works.

22 Outcome: An amplifier and incubator of the Euromed cultural actuality.

The MS STUBNITZ itself is an unusual and dynamic environment This project seeks to ensure that the MS STUBNITZ will make a definitive imprint on the cultural landscape of the Mediterranean and that consequently this will be of significant interest to the media(222)

221 A complete panorama of the Mediterranean cultural actuality.

This project will reflect the diversity of the individual protagonists and their contribution to the culture of the Mediterranean Basin (2211) and will ensure that their work is both listened to and seen by others; that it is in some way immortalised(2212)

2211 Project’s materiality / Collaborative initiatives: Promotion and interconnexion of the Mediterranean Basin’s cultural movements.

In each destination, the programming will seek to achieve a dual objective: It will be a comprehensive manifestation of the cultural diversity of the visited harbour and it will seek to develop links and collaborations with the cultural movements and players in other destinations.

The combination of those two elements will be achieved through the principles of shared management and shared programming that have been articulated above, and through the concept of having two international pools of young programmers as a core element of this “university within diversity” principle.

Further, the programming will follow articulated principles (the list is not exhaustive, it is still being designed):

A/ Principles:

• A 50/50 distribution between local artists and collaborative projects.
• A focus on emerging and dynamically unfolding projects.
• No exclusivity of style whatsoever: From extremely traditional to extremely modern..

B/ Research tracks

• "profiles" or "label programmes", where local label is given free rein to organize one or
several events aboard.

• "Scouts": Free rein given to artists to identify other artists that they would like to collaborate
with.

• Diaspora: Free rein given to artists of dual cultures.

2212 Project’s immateriality / Integrating cultural patterns: Development of an informatic tool for the exploration and the information of the Euro-Mediterranean Musical shapes.

In additionto the possiblities explored elsewhere in this proposal regarding the dynamic pooling of the Mediterranean basin’s cultural initiatives, the SIM aims at working towards the integration of its
musical patterns through a programme of collation and analysis of the sound material.

In addition to the existing ships archive (approximately 10 000 hours of music and sound experiments), a considerable database of more than 20 000 hours of music has been collected by some of the project’s partners.

Through the development of an online musical archive (A), the SIM aims to ensure that musical work is disseminated to others and that it is in some way immortalised (B).

A/ Concept :
Instead of implementing an arbitrary classification by "genre", "artist" or "origin" etc . we will seek to develop a classification system that could be made according to purely acoustic and musicological criteria, such as: texture, dynamics, spectrum etc .. this criteria needs to be defined.

A collaboration has commenced with a research center in informatics that is based in Sardinia. This facility pecializes in the development of "voice and motion recognition" applications. This research center is very interested in developing an algorithm, which would automatically process our archive according to the acoustic and musicological features according to our definitions.

So, for example research based on the characteristics of a solo by the contemporary saxophonist Evan Parker could lead to this being classified with music created by a virtuoso of the rabab or an electronic experimental piece of music and shouldn't restrict it to the label of a "free jazz saxophone solo."

Besides its musicological interest, this project will contribute to overcome the stereotype or "folklorism" that blurs representations of the music of the Mediterranean Basin, through the use of tool that would allow to draw parallels between musical forms emerging from very different, diverse cultural backgrounds.

B/ Interfaces :
One side product of this initiative could be the creation of an interactive installation hosted by institutions such as:

-The Mediateca del Mediteraneo in Cagliari
-The Biblioteca Alexandrina in Egypt and eventually
-the MUCEM (the new museum for Mediterranean Culture to settle in
Marseille by 2013).

222 Promotion and direct audience:
The MS STUBNITZ in itself is a unique vehicle of communication. It has a significant media profile due to its idiosyncratic character. It also offers a platform for live broadcasting and the establishment
of enhanced partnerships with media outlets.

It enables us to attract a wide and diverse audience, even for events that are not necessarily as high profile or as commercially viable as others.

2221 Communication:
Which can be classified as A: communication about the overall project and B: communication about the onboard events.

A/ Communication about the project:

Due to its idiosyncratic character, the ship does generate spontaneous news coverage when it visits different ports Planned communication will be managed by the local "coordinating partners" of the project.

The ship is fully equipped for the live broadcasting of all of the events that take place aboard; it is an ideal location for embarked TV and radio broadcastings.

B/ Promotion of the events.
MS STUBNITZ will function as a host for local organisations. It is an "open venue" that will simply be made available to local organisations for them to present their activities. It is an amplifier.

Hence the communication will be organized by the event organizers, using their usual networks and means of communication: social networks, local publications, local and free radios etc..

The MS STUBNITZ will offer support to this process.

2222 Direct audience :
By “direct audience”, we refer to the audience that will be physically welcomed aboard the ship.

The overall capacity of the MS STUBNITZ is of 700 hundered people, distributed among 3 main event spaces and the open deck (4 platforms).

The ship is a novel and unusual cultural venue. This fact alone attracts audiences, even for events that feature less than commercial music or less easily palatable art forms. The ship has modular performance platforms and can accommodate different cultural events at the same time.

MS STUBNITZ in the Mediterranean Sea will provide a comprehensive and all encompassing programme: we will attract audiences with a diversity of cultural interests.

This will be helped by the fact that the events will be organized with the support and patronage of established professionals of the field (see partner's list).

This helps us to increase the size of our audiences. Our financial well-being is partly based on ticketing revenue and bar income.

It is extremely difficult to provide an exact estimate of the expected audience figures, but an approximate estimate would be:

250 days of operation per year X 700 guests per day = 175 000 people from 5 countries.

The audiences will be varied, in terms of nationalities, cultural backgrounds, artistic interests

etc This diversity mirrors the goals of the overall project..

223 Viability and indirect audience: (under development)
2231 Development of national scale media partnerships.
2232 Editing works.

This part of the project is still under development: it is concerned with ensuring the projects operational and financial viability

We are actively engaged in developing partnerships withorganisations who will take over the management of the structure by 2013.
