The MS STUBNITZ - www.stubnitz.com - is a former industrial fishing vessel of the East-German fleet, that was converted in 1991 into a mobile cultural platform. The three converted cargo holds can accommodate around 700 people in total and are ideally suited as venues for live music, exhibitions, performances and media art. Additionally, the ship is fully equipped for recording, editing and the diffusion of sound and image and can host up to 30 artists.
Since 1994, the MS Stubnitz has been and remains a unique cross-cultural project, committed to the research and documentation of contemporary music and performance art across the Baltic Sea; for the benefit of artists, audiences and for cultural exchange. It has visited 15 different ports and more than 430 000 people have attended more than 1500 events hosted by the ship. Each performance is professionally recorded, edited and catalogued in the on-board multi-media lab.
The STUBNITZ IN MED program aims at taking full advantage of these facilities by making the STUBNITZ the first « Euro-Mediterranean mobile cultural center, co-ordinated by regional cultural operators of national and international resonance and dedicated to the discovery, the promotion and the dynamic collaboration between the cultural and artistic movements in the Mediterranean Basin »
By 2013, its management will be handed over to an association comprised of the different partners in the project. Cagliari will become the second homeport of the MS STUBNITZ. Palermo and Malta may be considered as alternate bases. From this base in the very heart of the Mediterranean Sea, it will be able to cover the rest of this region.
The ship will visit each venue for 4 to 8 weeks. A cultural programme will be developed which will concentrate on the unique cultural diversity of each harbour and the connections between all of the places visited. Key to this is the concept of shared management and shared programming which will be explored in this document.
Potentially this project has the capacity to generate strong media interest . Through the implementation of a truly integrative management and programming policy, this project serves to promote Euro Mediterranean Cultural Integration, whilst being respectful of the diversity, nuances, fragility and the dynamics of the cultural horizons it seeks to explore.
This project was launched in December 2009 thanks to support from the Anna Lindh Foundation. It is being submitted to the ENPICBCMED Cross-Border Cooperation in the Mediterranean Sea- European Program.
