Jaruzelski was a typical product of the wild german Underground-scene of the
80s. to provoke and shock the lame socialdemocratic scene which was the
ruling political class in Cologne for several decades. The choice of this
special name (of this special person) was (and still is) their statement not
to communicate in a constructive way with the ruling class: total
confrontation.
Their music includes loosely structured power-noise-performances between
Free Jazz (in the tradition of Masayuki Takayanagi, The Flying
Luttenbachers, Last Exit), Rock'n'Roll (The Fall, Rolling Stones, Elvis
Presley) and live-action (the guitar player, Dr. Borg, is really dancing
with his chair while outcasting his life!).
There were always great players inside that ever fluctuating group - but
the backbone of Jaruzelski was and is the Duo of Dr. Borg (Guitar,
performing, statements), Der Präsident ("The President", Drums, perfoming,
always late but never too late):
Dr. Borg, recently also known as Hans Grob, is the original godfather of the
Cologne underground scene. It is said that concerts only start when Dr. Borg
has taken his seat in the first row, drinking his much-too-strong-coffee. As
a strong and part-time-megalomaniac character he initiated the now very
advanced GROB-Label, but left shortly after he supported Felix Klopotek to
bring the label into life - his field of activities had to be wider than
"just" producing other people's records. Nowadays he still prefers to
perform live on stage with his electric Gibson guitar, which he extended
with a lot of found and randomized xobjects full of meaning of his secret
life. He plays also with the Free Noise Bands Koro (with acclaimed guitarist
Joseph Suchy and Der Präsident) and Sensitive Sisters (with Peter Brötzmann, Christoph Winkel
and Willi Kellers). Sometimes he shows up, sometimes he doesn't. But mostly
he does. His guitar playing covers a big range between Brian Jones and Sonny
Sharrock. Sometimes he's adapting the hard driving rhythm playing of the
young Elvis Presley.
Der Präsident is almost everywhere - he is a hobby-philosopher, played for
years quite succesful football, had an active role in the scene of "Kölsch
Karneval", writes lyrics and poems, plays Jazz Standards with almost-famous
Sax-player Axel Petry... a lot of activities... sometimes Jaruzelski is
already ready to perfom, the band was on stage... but the drummer's still
missing. Suddenly he appears out of nowhere and pushes everything forward
with his soft touches on skin and wood and his hard attack on the cymbals.
He is deeply influenced by the post-straight pulse-drumming of Sunny Murray,
the rocking free jazz of Willi Kellers and the incredible time-feeling of
Charlie Watts. There is no existing official recording of this band – and they`re proud of it!
